Robbie

The FTNB show of the week is tomorrow and I’m excited to share the details. Two local story-tellers, Matt Haeck and Darrin Bradbury, are opening the show. Robbie Fulks, a Chicago-based artist who has released a dozen albums over three decades will bring us home.

Matt’s debut album, Late Bloomer, is true to its name. It was recorded in a mere five days at the Eastside Manor Set under the watchful eye of producer David Mayfield. Those five days occurred over a year and a half ago and now we are a mere month and a few days away from the June 3rd release. The album features the likes of Critter Fuqua (Old Crow Medicine Show), Paul Defiglia (The Avett Brothers), Caitlin Rose, and Elizabeth Cook. Looking forward to getting my hands on one of these and excited for a preview tomorrow night. Stay tuned for more information here as the release approaches.

If you’ve been following FTNB for long, you know we’re a big fan of Darrin Bradbury. Hell, that’s a picture of him at the bonfire back when he had hippie hair on top of the page! It’s been a pleasure to watch him become more comfortable with his own voice, naked and exposed with just his guitar as opposed to fronting the Big Wilson River Band. (Don’t worry, he won’t actually be naked.) Darrin is a master of observation, weaving interesting tales based upon ordinary experiences and objects like grocery shopping and lawn chairs. I miss having a regular weekly gig where I get to listen to Darrin and try to catch him play every chance. He’ll be heading out west with Tim Easton soon, but will be back in town in time for a June 15th performance at Music City Roots. (He’ll do much more than just the Vietti Chili song this time, I assure you).

This will be my first opportunity to hear Robbie Fulks play. Everything I have heard and read leads me to believe it is going to be right in my wheelhouse. Based in Chicago, he is a true pioneer in the genre we now call alternative country. Robbie is a true performer with a long list of accolades including multiple appearances on the Grand Ole Opry, Whadd’ya Know, Fresh Air, Mountain Stage, World Cafe, Acoustic Cafe, Austin City Limits, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and 30 Rock. TV/film use of his music includes True Blood, My Name Is Earl, and Very Bad Things.

Fun fact: Matt and Robbie both have theatrical credits. Robbie’s include “Woody Guthrie’s American Song” and Harry Chapin’s “Cottonpatch Gospel.” Matt has been in “The Hank Legacy” and “The Cash Legacy.” Put the name of the play, real or imaginary, that you would like to see Darrin lead in the comments.

Paying $15 to see any of these gentlemen perform is a good deal. All three for $15 is an absolute steal. Buy your advance tickets here.

ASCAP AMPED

This evening Caylee Hammack and Zach Dubois will be performing at an ASCAP show at the Country. Another early, happy hour show convenient for those at Vandy or working in Midtown. Two-for-one beers until 7:00 and a solid selection of drafts.

Caylee will kick things off at 6:00 with her full band. She classifies her tunes in the Americana / Folk-country arena with a focus on complex lyrics and story telling. She’s been with ASCAP since she was 16 and made the move to Nashville from South Georgia three years ago. She is currently working in the studio on a new album, playing a couple one-off shows around town, and planning a tour to support the album upon its completion.

I first met Zach five years ago. He crashed on my couch for a week on his spring break from Notre Dame, trying to decide if he should get a “real job” or go on tour after graduation. Several tours and a few real jobs later, he has a video for the song “Work Harder” on daily rotation on CMT now. Growing up on in farming country in Elkhart, Indiana this has been Zach’s motto for some time now and his hard work has certainly paid off. He’s also in the early recording stages of his next project.

Looking forward to listening to Caylee for the first time and catching up with Zach this evening. Hope you can join us!
