Our first Featured Show of the Week occurrs tomorrow at the Basement.
Darrin was one of the first artist I had the pleasure to write about for another publication and I have been fortunate to call him a friend ever since. I find Darrin’s songs to be uplifting and humorous. They are uplifting in the sense that they describe life as I know it: complete with all the dirt, grime, and grit that you normally don’t hear about in popular music. After decades of borderline transience, Darrin has recently settled into his own house just outside of town. Can’t vouch for the picket fence, but it does come complete with a cat and dog and a human partner-in-crime. This is a major improvement from his first Nashville residence: sharing the back of a Ford Focus with his bass player, Cameron Carrus, for months in a Walmart parking lot.
I have yet to hear Joey, but he comes highly recommended and am looking forward to it.
Austin Lucas is headlining the evening. Austin hails from and currently hangs his hat in Indiana. He’s done the Nashville thing off and on for a while now. This show is a celebration of the upcoming release of his album Between the Moon and the Midwest, due May 27. Last time I heard Austin, it was a mostly solo set with some vocal accompaniment from his dog, Sally. He was able to get a tremendous amount of sound out of his guitar by himself. Tomorrow will be a special treat with the full band. His sound definitely fits within the Americana catchall genre blending traditional country sounds with harder rocking with just the right proportions. Can’t wait.
Advance tickets can be bought for $5.00 here.
